Is there any way to restrict access to the admin interface, especially from the internet facing interface, and from the interface facing unsecured portal users? I have tried using the firewall features however it appears the firewall is only able to restrict and control traffic that is crossing interface boundaries, not destined towards the captive portal itself.

Yours,
Michael

By default the web interface of Zeroshell is active on any interface and for any client. To restrict the access you have to use the section [Setup][HTTPS] from which you can enable IPs, network interfaces, subnets and a combination of both.
