i think the problem is with the bios of your motherboard
i had just about the same problem as you and solved it in this post i wrote http://www.zeroshell.net/eng/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1939
you basicaly have to delete the first partition, recreate it fat and use syslinux instead of grub
